Do you think she ran with him?
It didnât say she was wanted, but she could still be with him.
Is there a reward? Iâll find their asses!
The knock Iâve been expecting comes just before midnight, making me nearly jump out of my skin. Three uniformed officers stare at me after I open the door. My first instinct despite my terrorâor maybe because of itâis to laugh at the sight of one of them. Itâs the expression on his face as he tries to look serious and hard. Itâs difficult to do when he has chubby cheeks, pink from the cold, and looks round enough for me to roll him off my porch and into the snow with a push.
âWeâre looking for Oliver Stokes,â he says.
âHeâs not here.â No, heâs buried in a grave marked with his brotherâs name.
âWe have a warrant for his arrest. Weâre going to need to come in to search. If you refuseââ
âSave the threats and go ahead,â I interrupt with a sigh, suddenly exhausted.
Iâm not sure what youâre supposed to do when police are searching your place. I retreat to the living room and wait. At least theyâre looking for a person and not documents so they wonât tear everything apart.
After about ten minutes, they return. Mr. Pink Cheeks, who seems to be the spokesperson of the group, asks, âWhen was the last time you saw Mr. Stokes?â
âAbout ten oâclock this morning when he left.â
He scribbles in his little notebook. âWas that the last time you had contact with him?â
âYes.â
âDo you know his whereabouts now?â
âNo, he didnât tell me anything.â
After a bit more scribbling, he hands me a business card. âCall if you hear from him.â
Iâm surprised thatâs all there is to it, but they leave without any further questions. Alden told me to tell the truth, but I saw no reason to argue over his identity with three street cops who arenât going to have any say over the case or charges. Iâll save that for the detectives that I know wonât be far behind.
Itâs well past one oâclock in the morning when I crawl into bed. All I can think about is Den. Wherever he is, I hope heâs safe. His face is going to be everywhere. Hiding at a hotel isnât going to be an option. Is he even still in the state?
All those comments online discussing whether I ran away with him. Maybe I should have. At least then he wouldnât be out there alone, and I wouldnât be lying here wondering if Iâll ever get to see him again. Alden never wouldâve agreed. He waited years for us to get together because he didnât want me affected by his illegal activities. I wonder if one of his old criminal associates or biker friends is helping him now. I hope he has someone.
Being alone and afraid is the worst.
